Canadian Federal Election
With the federal election coming up next week, politics are on people’s minds. It seems most other people’s blogs are used for political blather. I’m not inclined to stay that ticked off on an ongoing basis. The purpose of this blog is mainly the promotion of my original artwork, but we’ll just take a short, brief step off of the path for a moment.
It seems a huge change is coming to the country. Polls indicate that the opposition Conservative party is poised to unseat the current minority Liberal government. Canadians finally became fed up with years of turmoil caused by scandals involving the “natural ruling” party. Canadians do normally hire a centre-left government, but still elected a Liberal party that governed using stolen conservative (mostly from the old Reform party) policy ideas for the last 13 years. So I’m not so sure that artists should worry as much as they usually do about what happens to arts funding when the shadow of a right-wing government darkens the doorway. These “Liberals” have been pretty fiscally conservative, so I don’t see much of a difference in the treatment of the arts. They will stay underfunded, as per tradition, but I don’t see outright cuts.
The NDP represents the left of the political spectrum, and they trumpet all of the fuzzy-wuzzy things we crave in a civilized world, but they are haunted, as always, by the spectre of high taxes and huge debt, and there’s the worrying sense that their feet don’t really come into contact with the planet.
So what do you do? There’s the Green party, which enjoys a tiny, but growing audience. What about them? I don’t know. I’m not sure which way I’ll go. There’s no perfect party, or perfect leader. I guess I’ll just cram some research in one night and go from there.
